    Lightbulb Top Best Webhosting Companies

Okay, I've asked this many times before and the "trial-&-error" thing is getting tired. I would really like a direct answer. There are plenty of experienced minds that view/post/work on this forum, so this should be able to be answered.

What are the best hosting companies - meaning, the best hosting for your money?

Maybe you guys could make a "top 10 list" or something, or provide a link to a top-10 list of hosting companies that we newbies to paid hosting can use so we don't lose our shirts on the wrong company.

I've asked this before, and have been met with more questions than answers. I'm hoping this will be one to trigger an onslaut of useful information. It would be great to have a current, routinely updated list/article(s) on webhosts evaluated and reviewed.

Anything like that on DevShed or it's forums?? I await an answer from the "Webmaster Gods"

    -------------------------------------------------------
    Minimums that I'm looking for:
    - Microsoft Windows Server
    - 500Mb or better drive space (for images/artwork/downloadables)
    - 1 Gig+ monthly bandwidth
    - 5 or more POP/SMTP mail accounts
    - 3+ subdomains (ie: http://subdomain.domain.com)
    - CGI-BIN folder
    - FrontPage Server Extentions
    - FTP access (not affecting monthly bandwidth allowance)
    - availability to save monthly charges by paying for 6-months or 1 year in advance (a plus, but not necessary) OR: just being able to pay for 6 months or 1 year at a time (instead of per month)
    - best uptime guarantee (a realistic one, not a "fantasy promise")

The majority of the people that visit this section of the forum are hosts. They are not allowed to self promote so this topic will be probably not get many good replies. Are you starting this because you are looking for hosting? If so you we can move this for you in to the request forum where hosts can provide a bid to your request.

Actually, I was looking more for a posting or website or forum links to where I can get a run-down of the best hosting companies - the ones that have the most consistent up-time, best prices, offer the most features for the money, etc.

Kinda like how a computer magazine will test & review computer systems or similar software packages, or like a car magazine rates different cars of the same class.

Does that help explain? Maybe you can move this to where it will get the most attention?

I can't answer all of the questions you have but netcraft.com has a monthly survey of what they feel are the most reliable hosts. Understand that there are many other measurements that are relevant too.

The problem with most of these sites are that they are run off affiliate money or paid advertising. So it is really hard to find real sites. One that I personally feel has been honest in providing information is this one:

    WHMReviews.com

Thanks! When I have a moment, I'll look this site over and see if it has the information that I (and I'm sure others) am looking for.

I personally like Site5. I don't work for them. I do have about 10 domains hosted by them, though.

Well i'd not say there's a top 10 straight out, it's different for what you want.

For example if I were to appear in a top 10, i'd be useless to you since i only offer linux hosting.

    Take the bare essentials
    -you need windows
    -you need 500mb space
    -you need 1Gig of transfer

and then you need the `standard stuff`, i'm calling it that since any DECENT host has that.

On top of that you'll want to look at support. You'll need helpful support who can sort out your problem.

Look for someone who can offer all of that and then compare the prices. Choose the lowest host that hasn't got any bad reviews.

That's the process i'd go by anyway.

It's hard to state who the top web hosts are, it's too subjective. Like Linuxpenguin said it's different for what you want.
Here are some web host directories if you're still having trouble finding a web host, and most of them have reviews too:

    http://www.hostbyte.com/
    http://www.host-dir.com/
    http://www.hostingseek.com/
    http://www.hostpulse.com/

    Good Luck.

    Cheers,

    While I have your attention...

    Thanks for the help!

Rifat has m6.net hosting in his signature. Has anyone else used them? Any comments on the package values & service?

I think GoDaddy.com are pretty good. The stuff you get for the price ($3 give or take) is really worth it. Interface isn't the best though- a little difficult to get around at first. I've had my site up with them for about 3 months now, and I have no complaints

    MediaTemple.com
's one of the best. They're a bit pricey though (If I can afford it I would've probably opted for them).

Check both out and see what suits you best. Both hosts have good reputations and good services to offer.

    Hope this helps

Ive had a very good experience with nexcess.net. Extremely good help files on he webpage & good responsive support.

Only slight issue is that the web admin panel you get runs through a high port that is blocked by most firewalls. Though that wouldnt concern everyone.
