Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /web/guide/rickster/public_html/wapme/lc_functions_wap.php on line 45
on the wap site, adminttely I was browsing through a web browser, so it is difficult to tell what the problem really is as doesn't seem to handle POST and GET too well. Agree with the other comments about being a bit cluttered..

Yesterday, I spent about an hour writing a reply ... but before I could post it, my PC hung ... today I try again
... I go straight to the point ya?Have a look at established portal sites for reference. Sites like bbc.co.uk or any of the bbc's sites, they are all very well done. And even yahoo.com, most people think yahoo is ugly, but I think how they place information is very well done. Study how they split a page into several columns. Newspapers and magazines have been doing this for ages. As a formal study of grids and layout, here is a simple excercise you can do. Get the best looking (most classy or most lively or both) newspaper in your view, then disect its layout by drawing vertical lines along all the text columns. then segment horizontaly by dividing its height (not including margin) into halves, first 2 then 4 then 6 then 8 and so on. Pretty creative how they use their grid system yes? Of course you can also print BBC or yahoo.com and dissect those too! On your site, you use thick borders to seperate different information. Your idea is right but because the borders are too thick it becomes distracting instead. Look at the space between the 'Employment' box and the 'Housing for rent box'. There are 2 thick borders where one would suffice. If you use icons that are related to the information, it would make it clearer, I can see that you are using colors to diferrenciate it, thats cool. But remember too much colors can also make the page look too colorful or cluttered. Thats all I have for now, I wish you all the best on your site! |

Thanks BamBam
What an excellent and thoughtful review of my site. It's a continual work in progress, and I will incorporate your ideas in the next round. I wish I could have read your entire one hour critique - that would have been facinating! Thanks again |

I wonder if instead of listing EVERY single choice in a column, stick them in a combo box or something similar.. or maybe just show the categories, and then move to the sub categories on the next page?? When I see the first page of a website so cluttered, I usually get frustrated or don't even bother.
6 images that display your 6 main categories would be way cleaner than all of those options... .02 |
