http://www.activedirectory-win2000.com
GOod morning!
I am working on my new web site. It is - as the title suggests - located at http://www.activedirectory-win2000.com. I would appreciate all thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc. Before everyone goes off on using tables for layout - I am very new to html and will be learning CSS soon so that will change ( once I have a handle on CSS! ). Also, I know that links taking one to a "Page under construction" page is a big no-no. It will not be too very long before that is resolved. So, other than those two items what does everyone think? Thanks, Cary |

It's look good enough. But I think you might need to put your link ( left-hand side ) on top when viewing a longer page?
Try use: <td bgcolor="#E0E0E0" width="20%" valign="top"><font face="Bookman Old Style"> Just a comment ![]() |

PKWong,
Thank you for your comment. I have been thinking about that as well. I will probably implement this as it does bother me that with a longer page the links slip lower and lower and lower! Thanks, Cary |

It looks great for a beginner, although I strongly suggest you learn some CSS and implement it into your site. CSS will make cosmetic changes easier and also is just more standard. ScoutHTML tutorials can help you out with CSS and HTML. After learning more proper ways to use CSS and HTML, you might find that you need to make drastic changes to your code... don't feel discouraged by this, though. |

Prov,
Why would I feel discouraged? I am just starting out and knew that this web site - as it now stands - will most likely have to be completely reworked. That sounds like a lot of fun to me! ;-) I eagerly await becoming more familiar with XHTML and CSS so that I can do it properly! And, I did post this question, requesting everyone's input. I knew that there would be some suggestions. I actually kinda figured that there would be some who would say that I should give this up....and go back to Active Directory Systems Admin work! Well, maybe not that harsh... My end goal is to learn PHP and MySQL so that I can build Intranet solutions for people ( the vast majority of firms here in Roanoke are really small and do not really require a full time IT person on-site ). Thank you for your input. If you have any more suggestions I would love to hear them. I am not really a graphics person ( just in case you did not already figure that out ) so I am working hard on making a 'pleasing to the eye' web site. I am afraid that if I did not ask I wouldstick with grays and blues and all those boring colors! Thanks again, Cary |

if you are looking to learn server side scripting i would suggest going with cold fusion because it will be the easiest thing for you to learn with you being new to web development and all.

I disagree. While Coldfusion might be easier to learn, it's expensive and most hosts don't support it. PHP and MySQL might take a little more effort to learn, but it's free and really not all that difficult once you learn the ropes, and there are a lot more servers and hosts where it's used. |

I would tend to agree with PROV on this one.
Although, I am a newbie it is very clear that MySQL and PHP are free ( and can run on a 'free' OS - pick your flavor of Linux / Unix - as well as on Windows ). I looked at the various versions of Cold Fusion ( where I worked in Beverly Hills the Intranet was Cold Fusion based ) and they are expensive. That is not really gonna fly here in tiny Roanoke, VA! I understand that PHP and MySQL are going to take a bit of time to learn - that is okay. I will eventually learn MS SQL and VB.NET as well..... Cary |
