Hi all,

It's not done yet, but I've built myself a little website. At this point, the main thing I need is for people to visit it and just let me know if everything's working.

I've tested it extensively, and I think it's good to go, but I want to make sure.

If anything looks out of whack, please let me know, as well as what screen size you have, resolution, browser, and all the usual crap.

http://www.ChrisBartlett.net

Oh, and all comments & critiques are welcome!

Chris

Hey, well done Chris! You have a very nice looking design. Red text on green is not my first choice. Might I suggest a different color? Perhaps white or some other light color. The grey headings on a grey background can make it hard to read, especially for the color blind. You might want to change that to a color that stands out as well. Beyond that the site looks great. The layout is logical and looks very sharp. Oh, I looked at your markup as well. Very clean, I'm impressed. Very well commented too. Keep up the good work.

I agree, veeeeeery nice!

As far as browser (go 'head and hate me) I use IE but have Firefox, Opera, and Netscape on my computer to check my own work. Screen resolution is 800x600 though my computer tells me it recommends 1024x768. Using 800x600 I'm getting a little bottom scrollbar on your site. If you bring your width down to 780 - 783 that'll dissapear. 800x600 users are the minority but a very large one.

Anyway, I really, really like your site!

Best to ya!

Thanks! I have to agree. From what I'm hearing, the red text is the killer for people. Gotta change that. But hey! That's the beauty of having an entire site run off ONE CSS file!

Thanks! I know what you mean at 800x600. I noticed that, too. In all honesty, I decided not to fix it. While I know there are still many people at that resolution, it is my belief that there are not too many left, and that 1024x768 is now the primary res. I've coded for that as a minimum.

At 800x600, MOST pages scroll, so I figure'd I'd be ok.

Thanks for your comments!

Chris

Ok, based on suggestions from communities all over the web, I've made some changes.

Several people didn't like the FF logo as it was (square with a white BG). I've now changed it so that it is integrated seamlessly into the gray BG. Better?

Several people said that the Google search field was too large and overlapped to the right on certain resolutions. I resized it. Better now?

Nearly everyone hated the old RED text because it was hazy and hard to read against the gradient BG. I changed all the text to white and increased line-height so it's a little less cramped. Better now?

Still working on other things, but what's the verdict in the meantime?

ChrisBartlett.net

Thanks, everyone! This has been invaluable.

Chris

Looks awesome!
I agree that 1024x768 is the norm and have tried to talk myself into scripting for that myself. Most sites do have the bottom scrollbar so I am getting used to it. Here are my site statistics though so it'll be a while for me. 800x600 96.89%, 1024x768 3.11%. I guess that's the best thing to go on.
Oh yeah! I like the white on green more too. The red on grey with blue hovers is very sharp. Red and green are complimentary colors so it is a legitimate color scheme though maybe not everyone favorite I think the little but of red on green you have left is working.

Looks good and fully functional in firefox. The links on the right are still red, however, and a little hard to read at a small font size.

Flash for a simple one question poll, though? Can you say overkill?

The Layout is Great I like how it's all there and easy 2 read and navigate. But I notice that your logo images look kinda chopy I mean they look good but the dots around the black kinda makes it hard to see but that just me . but maybe your lower the quality or you might be using Gif but other than that great job Keep it up

Good lord, I've attracted comments from the man himself, Mr. Holmes! LOL.

Hey John, thanks for the thoughts. Flash poll is overkill, eh? Well, who needs you...

You might be right, but it's just so darned purdy... Besides, I'll be damned if I'm going to change that after all the php hell I went through to even get it working. Little ole me actually learned some php. Well, one piece of code anyway... *Sigh* One day I'll learn it.

Thanks. I like the logo itself (as an idea), but hate the execution. It's too artifacted with the JPG quality. I'm in the process of redoing it.
