Question http://www.magikwebs.co.uk/ranch/

http://www.magikwebs.co.uk/ranch/

Hiya, some of you have looked over this site before but I've changed and improved it significantly and I'd appreciate your fresh comments. Particulary on the:
  • index page
  • colour schemes
  • background graphic (the lines)
  • the use of images

the pizza page is incomplete and the chicken page isn't there yet, or the about us page.

Everything comes from a MySQL DB and I wondered if I should design admin pages for updating prices, offers etc or just let the user access the MyPHPAdmin that is installed on the server. What would you do?

John.

Design admin pages.. with usernames and passwords.

I was about to comment on how beautiful this page is until I went to China and Indian. That is most unreadable thing I have ever seen from somebody that wasn't trying to make it unreadable (assuming that you weren't) So.. I'll just ignore everything past the initial page.

I am pleased to see that you put an effort into the code.. with the exception of the marquee tag, it validates. Though validation doesn't necessarily mean its right. It looks like you're using <B></P> where you should be using a header tag.. and that things aren't within <P></P> that should be.

Also, you might want to throw in some TITLE attributes for your Anchors.. particularly those images that are links.

It's slightly noticable that the right column does not line up properly with the container's border.

As far as presentation and look though.. it's a nice clean looking site, and I really like the appearance and the graphics. I might make the background (the grey one) a little dark to bring out the container visually. Other than that.. it looks great.

I really like the simple design that does so much.

Your menu pages are really bad. Absolutely unreadable. I thought your earlier menu (Indian {my bug fixes are still up}) was pretty good. The home page still looks fine. It's just the menu pages that have no continuity of theme with the entry page.

Accessibility is a problem due to the colors/pattern and the lack of semantic html. Doesn't the EEU have some pretty strict laws on that?

[edit]I forgot to say, "Please lose the g——d d——n f——ing marquee." I'm saying 'please' because I'm such a nice guy. [/edit]

cheers,

gary

china and indian are totally unreadable in mozilla...i actually opened the page up in ie to look at it, and it looks much better in ie which must be what you are testing it with, take a look in mozilla and make the needed changes.

Taking a hint from jacktasia, I checked in IE. Much better. I still think there is a continuity break from the entry page to the menu pages. That makes the background stripes seem harsh.

The addition of the food pics really livens up the pages. Good move.

Now, the Moz problem. I haven't tested, but the problem may lie here
Code:
.mainholder {
	width: 765px;
	padding: 5px;
	margin-right: auto;
	margin-left: auto;
	text-align: left;
	background-color:#B4E2FC

}
Put a semi-colon after the background-color line. It's not required, but Gecko seems to expect it. Without it, background is rendered transparent, the default.

cheers,

gary

ps. Do your testing in Mozilla or Firefox. IE is entirely too buggy and non-compliant to use as a test-bed. gt

hmm, I added the semi colon but no change in Firefox, I'll take another look, maybe I need to set a z-index or something.

Gary, I take it you don't like the marquee then

But why did you add the background image?
Code:
.mainholder {
	width: 765px;
	padding: 5px;
	margin-right: auto;
	margin-left: auto;
	text-align: left;
	background-color:#B4E2FC;
	background-image: url(images/indiabgflat.gif);
}
The marquee? It might be a bit annoying.

cheers,

gary

I added the BG image when adding the semi-colon didn't help. I wondered if a BG image on the mainholder div would sort things out. The image is just a plain light blue block. But it didn't help.

I ditched the original design with the faded bg picture because the client didn't like it and some feedback had said it made the menu hard to read, although I never had any problem with that myself.

Any other suggestions about making it work for firefox would be appreciated and yes, I'll ditch the marquee once I've fixed this other problem.

For those who have looked at the pages in IE, what did you think to them? Garish? Eye-catching? Mouth-watering? Amateurish? Slick? Sick ? Should I make the intro page look more like the others so theres a consistent design theme and add maybe a border of food pictures?

Cheers,

John.
