I switched from using plain tables for the layout to css and <div> tags, any suggestions?

Switching is truely worth it, there are a few mistakes in your code:
Validator

DO NOTs:
  • use line breaks (<br>) use css instead.
  • use the <center> element, it is deprecated, use the css rules to achieve the same effect.

DOs:
  • Surround the list items with <li> tags,
  • If you want to make the lists horizontal, use the follow css - ul.horizontal li{display:inline}
  • Use an external style sheet, it will cut down on your page size and make things much more maintainable, link using <style>@import()</style> or a <link> element

There is quite a bit to think about there, good luck

Cheers

When I use an external style sheet things change for some reason, the fonts go back to times roman and the sizes change, take a look:

I assume you know about the dead-end links ;p

The links on the top right, the picture ones, look weird when you hover and they have a green background. I suggest excluding them from the rules.

I glanced at the page and clicked on a few plants. I think when it shows the profile for the plant the headers for like "plant name" and "species" should be larger than the text information, as it looks now it is hard to see the separation of titles vs. content.

I would consider 1 px borders only, and toning down the contrast - its a little bright on the eyes...

Otherwise, its a good job
