Searchable scripts directory - webmaster community
http://www.webgeekworld.com
how do you like this ? this was formerly r2xdesign net, a wht member was selling. purchased it, increased its script listings to 10 k + , shaped it up a bit with addition of an integrated forum. search is powered by mysql fulltext search. gotta admit, im impressed by mysql's that search capability - i have never used it before as such. i'd like to get comments, opinions etc on usability. Based on my first impression (just looking at the design elements), I'd say the site is lacking pizzazz. The colors are dull, and there's little visual stimulation.
Other comments: (1) You have "second nav" under your top navigation. I'm guessing this is a placeholder, but it shouldn't be there. (2) Your homepage goes on forever... cut the number of new items to like 5 or 10. (3) Your source code needs a lot of work. - For starters, try to start indenting your code appropriately - it's terrible to look at. - Your code has 159 errors when passed through the W3C validator... clean that up! (4) the Y!Slow plugin for Firefox gives your site a "B" grade, which is actually pretty good. What does that mean? Performance-wise it's not bad - mainly because you don't make a large number of HTTP requests. My only suggestions are to address these 4 points and consider changing the color scheme. Otherwise, you're off to a solid start. |

Allright i have improved the site, implemented some advice i received, didnt implement some others because other things pressed more.
I have mainly worked on usability and the interface, made page navigation bigger, changed the way search lists its results etc. good thing is, site was doing around 200 daily unique visitors a day when i posted this topic. now its around 1000 daily uniques. but still, people just dont care much for the forum. though search utility use is on the rise. i like that very much. i came back to this thread to get another round of advice. please shoot away (sorry should have posted the link again here in this post for convenience - here http://www.webgeekworld.com ) |

You've got a javascript error somewhere. I have my debugging on in IE so everytime I click a link I get an alert.
I'd like it if you said "No scripts in the category yet" message or something similar in the empty cats. I clicked around for ages at one point only hitting empty cats and thought for a moment it was broken. Listings seem a little claustrophobic to me. Could do with some padding between them or something. Forum skin doesn't seem fully integrated with the rest of the site. |

yea i was messing with a small javascript earlier and had issues with it. i guess you chanced upon it.
ill take other feedback into account. i put the 'no scripts yet' notifier. Last edited by unity100 : May 12th, 2008 at 09:31 PM. |
