I wonder what happened to my post. I was the first to reply, and u have said thanks for the comments, but my post isnt there!! How strange! I wouldnt do all the design, with jpgs as it makes it to long to download! |

Very bold. Links slightly too far left in the navbar. Title needs more something interesting to draw the eye. Border of the blocks looks very fat and makes it look simplistic and unprofessional. The word media in the title looks squashed.
Sorry!! Jack. http://www.GuitarAd.co.uk |

Very contrasting colours, could do with some leading in almost. It looks brash and is the red one of the standard reds? If so id change it to a custom one, standard is too bright and cheap.

I think it's a cool layout...however I agree that the colors are pretty bold. If that's a style choice, then that's fine with me, I just tend to prefer more muted, blended colors. I think probably the biggest thing that got me was having the white border around your boxes...have you tried using grey instead?
You said that you were having trouble getting things to be aligned. This is one place where fireworks really comes in handy, as it allows you to select multiple objects, then align them any way that you want. I don't know what you're using however, or if what you're using has an option for this. The other thing you can try is to make a guide and align them to the guide. One thing about the rounded rectangles...the edges are very pixelated. I'm sure that you can make them look smoother with a little bit of work in your graphics software, whichever you use. |

ill have a look with the grey see if it looks better - thanks for the idea
ill sort out the corner bits aswell i thought they looked a bit pixelated just havnt had time to change it yet i think ive sorted out the alignment things, its because i was using a table to put the links in the left rather than just type it into box im using dreamweaver and paint shop pro ive had a go with fireworks and i couldnt get my head round that at all, ive also tried photoshop and that was a bit easier to use but for basic things paint shop pro i find much easier - although i am trying to learn photoshop

Fireworks is cool if you don't want to worry about your code, or add anything other than rollovers. I admit it can be a bear to get the hang of though...have you tried going through their tutorials? The ones that come with MX are pretty awesome! I say not worry about code because what it does when you export it to HTML is this: it parses the .png file into a series of small jpg or gif clips, and then the HTML file is the most complicated table you've ever seen, with a link to each picture in the corresponding cell. But it works, you get a nice looking site with it!
The thing I like about Fireworks for drawing is that it handles basic shapes, and then lets me import other graphics if I were to draw them in, say, PaintShop Pro or Freehand. Honestly, I wouldn't use photoshop for drawing things...I use that for editing photos, but that's it. When I first started doing web design, I used it exclusively, and had two problems. First, it was a pain in the arse to get it to do what I wanted it to do. That's because it's not really meant to be a drawing program...that's what Illustrator is for. Which brings me to point 2 - by the time I finally figured out I was using the wrong program, I didn't want to have to learn how to use another one! So after 5 years, I'm just now learning how to use things like Fireworks and Freehand. Definitely keep going with PSP if that's the one that you like...as long as it's a program that's truly meant for drawing, you'll be able to get a nice looking product with relatively little effort. Good luck to you! |

what is this site for?
I think the purpose of the site is always the most important deciding factor as far as about anything. So the question is... what is this site for and who is going to be looking at it (realistically) that may make it easier to answer

cheers beth and lizard my site is basically my 2nd major attempt at website design, its not really for anybody, im starting uni in september to do website design and multimedia, and i wanted a site to upload my work to as im guessing when i start (seen as its a website course) they are going to say get a host with some space. my site has actually changed now its http://media.websiteunited.com but the layout etc is the same ive just got more databases and bandwidth on this site beth- ill have a go at trying to learn fireworks but it seemed ery complicated and if its just to draw shapes i can do that in paint shop pro with no problem at all, as for code i dont really need aprogram to do it for me as with html im pretty good, its when u come to php i get , but ill have a go with it anyway, you never know i might actually like it |
