    Kitty-Cam

Thank you for taking the time to look at my site. Kitty-Cam features two webcams aimed at where our four cats can be found.

    http://www.kittycam.net/

This is approximately the 4th re-work of the site since I first launched it in 2003. The previous versions of it were atrocious as I didn't know much about web design.

Drupal 5.7 powers the back end of this site. Drupal has a webcam module that I'm obviously taking full advantage of. I use the image modules for the previous webcam images.

As you can see, I don't have a whole lot of content there and I'd like that to change. I also hope to come up with more ways for people to interact with the site.

    Thanks!

Get rid of the digg button. To be honest, its not a site thats going to make it anywhere near the front of the digg page so get rid of it to make it a cleaner front page.
Would be a better idea to change kitty-cam item in the menu to read home.

Thanks. I took your suggestion and changed the name of the top button from Kitty-Cam to Home. I agree that makes more sense.

I also agree I won't make it very far on digg and will eventually get rid of the button so my site doesn't look like it rating so pathetically low! For the moment, I think I'll keep it though.

as a not, webpages about your pets, are a big no no's, unless you are just trying to learn webdesign. then its ok. but pages about pets dont do well what so ever. think about it would you like to see live feed 24/7 about some random persons pet, is that a website you would enjoy going to? not being trying to offend you, just telling ya what i think

Does a webpage need to do "well" in order to earn a spot online?

I'm not offended, just trying to understand where you are coming from. People put a lot of crap out there, I don't think my site about my cats is the worst thing available. And if you look at the forums on my site, I've gotten some nice compliments.

I like it. Everything seems to fit together well in terms of coloring and design, and it's still highly usable without any CSS at all.

(Plus, it's a site about awesomely cute kitties. Can't really go wrong with that. )

Oh i dont have anything against, a website about live feed about your cats. I think if you were to have a site like this, user interactivity would be great, such as being to have profiles and live feeds of there cats and pictures.

The site looks ok, although I think it could be modernised a bit with a better menu and logo.

Also when I open it part of the first sentence "Kitty cam has been running nearly" is for some reason lodged between the two camera views and the rest below the cameras, it may be my resolution etc but maybe its something for you to look at.

    Well I totally disagree TBH.

Do you have to play rugby only for England and get paid well for it or can you have a freindly game of rugby with some freinds down the local park and do it for free?

The internet is for everyone and not just for porn and making money, thats what makes the internet great. Take this forum for one, it's a great example of the alternate side of the net that being freedom of speech and freedom to express your opinions.

If you are making money from your site ie: ecommerce then yeah ok a webpage does have to do well, but if it's a hobby site no it doesn't it's a hobby which only you care about and hopefully other people will as well.

I do think you can take this further and I do agree with XenNetwork. Increase the pages, but only if you want to, to allow other people to post thier cats pics etc... in a seperate section of your site but be carefull you will need to look into filtering to remove any dangerous input that hackers could put into your site.

But if you would like some constructive criqutism add some articles about cats, caring for cats, cat sheltors, the costs of cats over the year, what breeds are rare, what breeds need special care that sort of thing.

Link out to other sites about cats that your site vistors would find usefull.

I personally dont like the colour scheme but thats my opinion, if you want to pick up a copy of beautiful web design by site point it has got some good points on colour contrast and design in principle, it helped me out a lot TBH. But if you are happy with it leave it, it's your hobby at the end of the day.

Ideally you shouldn't have links that link to the current page, on the home page both the home button and home bread link, link to the current page, this can be confusing to your site visitors, Is this the home page? Why is this the home page but there is a link to the home page? Is this really the home page?

I would also look into the image in the nav preloading there are lots of free scripts online if you search for Javascript preloaders. These load the images before the image is hovered over. The effect is an instant transition rather than the image disappearing for a few seconds.

If I may be so bold to suggest a slight change to the layout. I love the header for your site I think it is nice for the site that it is. I would turn the main content section's background colour white, and add dropshadow images to either side, this will give you some whitespace and help to break the layout up. Try it and see if you dont think it looks right fair enough but thats what i would do if it was my site.

TBH you have done the right thing you have chosen something you are very passionate about and decided to go with it rather than working on sites that you couldn't care less about just that you want to make money from them.

Well done on following your dream and not just thinking what if like 90% of every one else in the world, including myself.

    Jaz

    What are you on about?

A rugby player has to do well to earn a spot in a team and even better to earn a spot in the national team.

janusz-jasinki - His point is it is possible to play rugby and have fun at it WITHOUT being a pro and making money. Everyone starts somewhere and not everyone needs to go all-out to be happy.

Exactly, sometimes there is a small thing outside of work known as fun which is a free activity most of the time lol.

But as janusz-jasinski is a fellow Brit and we have the longest work hours in all of Europe I can see where he missed the point due to overwork and tiredness lol.

Thanks for the excellent review jazajay! I'll admit I've set the site down due to other pending projects, but they are all great suggestions to take into account when I can get back to it.
