2 Problems with win2k network

I hope someone out there can help me.

2 Problems that I am having. I'm running win2k server with latest sp and wink2 pro on the clients. I currently have the IP addresses for each machine hard coded vs using DHCP

First is that I have a machine that I have been able to assign to a workgroup, however, I want to assign it to the domain. Whenever I try I get a DNS lookup error. I can use the internet find though.

The other issue is if I try using DHCP, the clients get an IP address fine, however, they can not get out onto the internet.

Can some one please help.

First problem. Is there a firewall or router handling the internet connection? Can you ping the domanin server? Are you on the same subnet as the domain server?
...
Second problem. What has been set as the default gateway and dns when assigning DHCP info?

First problem....there is a firewall on the server....the subnet is the same...I have additional machines with the exact same settings (except for machine name and IP) and they work fine.
.....
Second, I tried just using auto DHCP and hard coding the DNS as the same as if I hard code the IP

So you are able to ping the domain server? Is there any personal firewall on the machines in question?

SIMILAR PROBLEM:

I have a computer running Win2K Pro trying to connect to a network with a domain. I run the network identification, join a domain and it gets all the dhcp settings and all is fine. Not quite. Internet works and it can find the domain... but it cannot access the network.

ie. Network neighbourhood, entire network, entire contents, ms windows network, domain name, then .... nothing, then service is not available.

I've checked IP Config /all and everything seems ok...

What's the deal????

Talking

I had exactly the same problem on my home network. This will sort you out;

URL

What I did was the following;

1 - Enable DNS server on the Win2k server
2 - Add DNS entries for your DHCP scope. Your Win2K server should be the primary server.
3 - You can then add external internet servers if you wish. This way your clients can still access the internet if the DNS server is down.
4 - Follow the instructions in the article, using an external DNS server IP address as the forwarder.
5 - Release/renew on your clients

Let me know how you get on!
