7zip support in future

Looking for opinions here... how futureproof do you think the .7z archive format will be?

I am archiving a lot of my documents for the future, and would prefer to zip them up with the .7z format, because it takes up less space. However, I wonder if I should choose ZIP instead since it is more widely supported, and probably not going away.

So what do you think? Do you think 7Zip is here to stay?

zip is so universal I'd stick with it for archiving documents. Some day in the far future you may need to look in a zip file on a non-windows computer, or one without 7z support.

But 7z is common too, there is an extractor available on linux I think.

I don't think 7zip will go anywhere anytime soon, I use it for archiving most of my documents.

7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license

If you also get the source code for the version you're using, you'll always be able to extract your data no matter what happens.

If you're worried about 7z, are you also worried about .DOC / .PDF or any other proprietary file formats you may be archiving, in case the owners of those formats vanish.

How long are you expecting to keep the archive - if it's decades, then I would be concerned about any proprietary file formats.

Hi guys, thanks for your points -- they are all valuable. I agree with the comment that as long as I have the 7Zip source code, I can compile it myself.

Also, since 7Zip (and LZMA) often get better performance than Zip, I think the algorithms will probably last. I think Google even delivers Chrome installer files in 7Z format now.

Also, that's a good point about the proprietary formats. .DOC will not be around forever!

I love 7zip. The compression options are much better and, as others have said, I don't see it going anywhere any time soon.

Keeping the source code is smart.
