Can't collect system information

Hi everyone,

Everytime I tried to check the system information from "Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information" I get the message :

Can't Collect Information
Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing.

Does anyone has any idea why and how I can troubleshoot this problem? I am not sure if this is related to why my system always reboots itself unexpectedly and frequently.

if you have your xp install cd, drop it in the drive, go to start, then run, type sfc /scannow it will fix it's self, if you just want to see what all is in your computer type dxdiag in the run command, it gives all the system info also.

Install the Windows 2000 or XP WMI from the cdrom. Unexpected and frequent reboots? Scan very well for viri and trojans using online (Panda/Housecalls/Rav) virus scanners and/or installed scanners such as AVG or Norton. Another common cause is bad RAM, so running Memtest86 from floppy would be a good thing.

AIDA32 is a very good system information program, providing even more than the built-in information. Just a thought.

Download the Enterprise edition.

Hope this helps!

How do I go about reinstalling the WMI? I inserted the XP cd, but there was no such options. Furthermore, this machine is a new machine, I doubt it has anything to do with any trojans or viruses. I set this machine up myself and I have a feeling there may have been some conflict somewhere with the devices. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot this problem? I have already reinstalled XP on my system twice in a week.

right click the my computer icon or start menu link, select properties, then click the hardware tab, then device manager. look for any yellow ! or ? do you get any error messeges? if so look in the log file. and just because a computer is new with the best anti virus program doesnt mean you dont have one or cant get one. and did you use the ram test DoesntCompute offered? it could be bad ram, cheap ram, depending on the type of board you have ram is a tricky issue these days.

I have also checked the device manager and there are no devices which requires attention. Will troubleshoot the ram ASAP. Tried sfc /scannow too, but it still doesn't solve the WMI issue. dxdiag works fine, and it is able to identify the 512Mb RAM.
