Thumbs up computer hangs after entering desktop

I got an unusual problem, whenever my pc had finished loading up all the icons and components in the taskbar, my harddisk stops reading and hangs. Sometimes a 'Blue Screen of Death' appears saying that an error occured on...blah..blah i can understand the error codes actually but as far as i remember it has a VxD and followed by number. What might be the problem of my pc. please help!!!

can you supply a little background on this, is this a new install, new machine, anything added or updated recently?

Quite some time now, I've been using only Visual Basic. I really can't give you the numbers that appears on the 'blue screen' since it only happens twice, my pc seldom stop responding after loading all of its components, and the ctrl-alt-delete won't work so i have to press the restart button, when scandisk runs it doesn't detect any bad sector, nor any virus with my anti-virus. My friend told me that it might be the constant use of VB, some files might have been corrupted, others told me it might be when i drefrag my files.... I really don't know what causing this problem... but i hope i'll get to the top of this

from just what you posted, its hard to narrow down. like ctrlaltdel said

there have been several new windows updates, and critical updates, one or more of these could have corrupted something, or conflict with something. any driver updates, or new software, spyware, ect could cause this. with all the viruses that are bouncing around on the net, some designed to circumvent onboard anti virus, maybe a good online scan would be worth trying.

such as http://www.antivirus.com

Housecall will do a free online scan that has all known virus types.
