Back when I had Win98 I had a bootdisk with deltree on it and I simply deleted the directories 'windows' and 'program files' as well as the files in the root dir (C:\) (eg autoexec.bat, config.sys, etc.) in DOS-mode (after backing up all data in its subdirectories to other dirs/cd while still running in windows). After that simply run setup from the cd (or use the autoboot function on the cd) and it should put a new version of windows right in between your other dirs...
While I'm pretty sure this is how I did it (and that it worked for me ) still make sure you have a backup of your (most important) data since with things like this there are always things which can go wrong and it would be a shame if you lost any valuable data!!Good luck

I would suggest a format, but before you do, make a bootable 98 CD. Can't get much cleaner than that.

Agreed on creating a bootdisk, backing up your files, etc...

Inside of your 'Windows' directory, is there a sub-dir called
'Options' with a sub dir called 'Cabs' in it? In the 'Cabs' dir are there cab files? If so, this would be all you need to completely re-install win98. You can: 1.) Burn the cab files onto a cd and when you format the drive, create a win98 directory on the 'C:' drive. run 'setup' from DOS and go to town. 2.) Create a small partition called 'D:' or 'Z:' copy the cabs to this partition, and run setup from this drive after the format of 'C:' |
