Disk problem when reinstalling xp

I had to start reinstall of xp, because I got the message "operating system not found" when I turn on my laptop.
The first time I startet all went fine but I could not find the product-key and stopped installation. To day I found the key and but it stops when trying to format the partision, and says that there may be somthing wrong with the disk. Can not format the partision. But can the disk be distroyed over the night? Also get a message that the setupdd.sys file may cause the problem.
