Lightbulb Halo Is Not Working! Aagh!

I recently got a PC. You may have read my other thread.
(it was free. Other specs good except the video card. It didn't have one.
Only 32 megs on integrated video. Yuck.

So then I went and bought a 50 dollar video card with 256. Runs great.
My friend helped me install it.

I installed the driver that came with it.

Here's a link to the actual card.
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814102484
It supports DirectX9 so I can't image it's too "old" for Halo and other slightly older games.

When I launch Halo however, it starts to go, but then tells me that is sees the card, but can't start up DirectX 3DDraw. or something. It says Hardware Acceleration may be off.

I ran the dxdiag program from the run menu and Hardware Acceleration IS ON.

Any ideas? I am baffled and a little ticked off my (expensive for me) video card isn't doing what I want it to. *big surprise*

You will be able to download updated drivers from the vendors website, and in this case www.ati.com

Just to check - I know some graphics cards aren't compatible with some games, have you checked to make sure your card is compatible with Halo ?

It might be seeing the video on the motherboard still ... if you go into BIOS you should have something like "Legacy Video" you should be able to disable. I haven't had this specific issue with video, but I have has audio conflicts before on an older machine where the plug-in card was conflicting with the onboard audio.

Or even make sure your Direct-X is up to date. Check here

Here's what Halo is telling me when it refuses to boot up.

"Initializing Direct3D failed. Hardware acceleration maybe disabled. Run DXDIAG"
I've seen it so many times I have it memorized.

I will update my driver tonight. (time permitting)
And I DO have the lastest version of DirectX: 9.0c
I can confirm that. I just checked again in fact.

Oh. Here's the specs Halo is reporting to me.

    1400 mhz, 512, 384M ATI (0x1453)

Of course, I don' t get the last part.

Not sure, thinking that maybe the '384M' means your card has 384M transistors !? Best thing I can come up with !

What happens now when you try to run DXDIAG ?? Have you made sure that Hardware Acceleration is set to 'Full' ? Right-Click on your desktop and select 'Properties' from the menu. When in your display properties, select the 'Settings' tab and then click on the button marked 'Advanced' and then click on the 'Troubleshoot' tab. You should then see a slider for hardware acceleration - make sure it is set to full.

    I figured it out!!!!!

If you try searching for Halo + Direct3D on google, you'll get a mountain for forum posts with people having my exact same problem.

The solution turned out to be very easy.
See the attached pic. All I did was download the small file and replace with the file in the Halo directory.

    That's it. Nothing more.

Now you can waste 48 hours of your life. Try not to make the hours consecutive ... :-)

    Cheers.
