Hard Drive Copy and swap problems

I'm running Windows XP Home. It resides on a 16 Gig Hard drive, and there's also a 30 gig slave hard drive.

THe 16 gig IDE connection is acting up, so I got an 80 gig hard drive (western digital). What I'm trying to do is copy the 16 gig onto the 80 gig, and then just remove the 16 gig from this pc (80 gig will be the master).

I'm using Western Digital's tools to copy everything over.

However, after it does the copying, and I reboot (I change the pin settings, etc.), I get this message:

"NTLDR IS MISSING"

It looks like something's wrong with the partition. How do I fix this?

Thanks.

-Nick

xp drive swap

Do you have the xp install cd? if you do drop it in and run the repair, will fix the boot record. if you only have a format and recover cd, or on board recovery, get a xp boot disk set, not the msdos disk xp makes but a xp start up disk set, 6 floppys. if you dont know where to get one go to http://www.bootdisk.com/
start up with the disk, and fixboot.

I do have the XP disc. I put it in, select repair, and all it does is go to c:\system (or maybe c:\windows, don't remember). Is there a set of manual commands I have to do?

hard drive

try selecting install xp instead of repair, then it will give you the option to repair again, try that one, if it dont work, go ahead and reinstall xp, just DO NOT FORMAT and you wont loose anything, except a few windows setting, if you changed anything

Well, since IE is so integrated into the OS, the favorites were overwritten. However, I'm going to copy and paste it from the old hard drive.

Thanks!

drive swap

sorry, never had it loose info even from the ie explorer, usually, without a format it acts as a upgrade and saves all of it, unless it was corrupted in the trans. from one drive to the other

I think you should not have lost your favorites and settings.

Look in "C:\Documents and Settings". If your user name is eg. "nickwinters", you should *normally* have one folder there with this name. But now if you look, you should have two. The second is called "nickwinters.000" which is your new profile folder. Copy everything from "C:\...\nickwinters" to "C:\...\nickwinters.000" to get your old profile back. (enable "Show system folders" and "Show hidden files" in the folder options first or you will miss most of it.)

You may be right! I just realized that hidden folders are hidden by default. I'll try that out tonight. Thanks!
