Has anyone ever seen this?

Error code 184:Access control antenna not detected

I'm getting that error on a win98 box. Upgrading this box is not an option at this point (cheap owner) . I've searched high & low for solutions to no avail...

Well, when does the error come up? Does an event of some kind, be it user or program generated, trigger it?

i get the message at startup, it gives me the error and then gives me a screen asking me if i want to continue to the system setup screen or just exit....if i go to system setup, even if i dont make any changes, i am just brought back to the same screen as before....if i exit and dont go into the setup, it loads windows fine.

Harder to tell under win9x, can you run 'msconfig' and see what programs are being set to load on boot. Might be something offending in there that's causing it, though what and how to look for it varies a lot. Might be a lot of guess-and-check.

I've always considered myself an expert in windows, but this error has got me stumped, I've never seen it, nor has any of my collegues, and every internet search comes up dry, even microsoft.com...

Yeah, I hit up technet, which used to work wonders in my last tech support job, but now it's littered with stuff that, I think, belongs in msdn. I thought technet was using their software and msdn was programming with their languages/tools/sdks etc. Oh well, another botched mishmash.
