hi, my windows 2000 recently crashed and i'm trying to reformat my HD (back-ups done). my hd has 3 ntfs partitions and i want to reformat it... i tried using fdisk and powerquest's partition magic( this using another HD and my 40 hd as slave) but fdisk hangs up after choosing the desired activities... sooo any ideas on how to reformat my HD? hehehe i would really appreciate the help

Fdisk is a partitioning tool. Format is a formatting tool. Big difference between the two.
You can do both from the W2K install. So boot the W2K cd by either a ME boot diskette or via the bios set to boot the cdrom first and repartition or reformat as you desire. If you had problems with PM its either because of not being a w2K version or your ide config is wrong and the drive isn't been seen correctly. If ide put the drive alone on the 2nd ide channel as master. |

hello wanderer2, i had 3 partitions on my hd so i used fdisk... i have already tried the solutions you have stated before posting this topic but setup disks had errors with the hd and displayed the blue screen of death hehe... anyways i later found out that my HD was "dead" after making back-ups(that was what the other pc technicians to me... maybe they were lazy enough to repair it)... oh well i just returned it to the shop and they replaced me with a new one hehe... but anyway i'm still interested on the other solutions heheh

setup disks are prone to problems. bypass them and boot the W2K cd rom directly or use a ME boot diskette as suggested to gain access to the W2K cd. Start the install from the i386 folder on the cd with "winnt". Use install to partition and format the new drive.
Hopefully with the new drive you won't have any more issues. |
