I had problems with the previous winxp installation, so I installed another one in a separate directory to prevent formatting the HDD. Now I want to delete the previous installation. How can I do that?

There are ways around this, but you are probably going to be fighting with boot issues. The best and most reliable thing you can do is to backup your important files, delete all partitions and re-install.

You might rename your previous installation windows folder to something else and make sure there aren't complaints from your current installation.
When you are satisfied you can delete the old windows installation and remove it from the boot.ini file so it won't show on a startup menu. Better is as Tom said to start over. If you delete the 1st installation you'll be left with a non-standard windows folder name. |

My previous installation is in c:\Windows folder and the present installation is in c:\WinNT folder. The boot.ini file looks like this:
****************************************** [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect ****************************************** Should I delete the lines beginning from {operating systems]? |

If you have everything backed up, it may be easiest to just do a clean install from the CD and choose to overwrite the existing installation.

Your boot file shows that you're booting to the \windows folder installation. There should be an entry for your \winnt folder instance too.
