I.C.S. with Win2k and Win XP

Im am trying to setup internet connection sharing with the Win 2000 pc being the host and the Win XP machine being the client.

The only trouble is, no matter what I do, the Win XP machine doesn't seem to be able to look up the DNS server of my ISP.

If I find the IP address of the website i want to look at, and type that into IE/ping command, it works (also MSN seems to be working happy).

Note: yes i have done a search on the internet, but have found nothing and no, a search on this forum revealed nothing.

afaik you need to setup your winXP machine to use valid internet name servers.

- connect your win2k machine to the net.
- look up the assigned DNS servers (not sure where you can do this in w2k, in xp itīs displayed in the status tab when you click on your internet connection in the network neighbourhood).
- enter these at your winxp machineīs network setup.

then it will work

other than that way, you would have to setup your w2k machine for acting as a caching dns server and enter the w2k serverīs ip into your winXP for dns.

Your XP machine will use DHCP to obtain IP address (private, 192.168.x.x) and you should make sure "Obtain DNS from DHCP" (or something close) is checked.

The W2K "dhcp server" in ICS will supply IP, GW, DNS. This DOES assume the W2K machine has a correct DNS address for an Internet DNS server.

You did not mention if you are doing this on dial-up or broadband, but you can't make it work using one network card into a shared-hub or switch or router to broadband. The router and W2K system both would be DHCP servers on the same physical network and weird things happen. Hope it's dial-up or you have two network cards...

Just a thought.
