installing xp

Help!! I've got an Advent 6412 dvd lappy (uk brand) 1 gig clock. It was running win ME, and decided to upgrade to xp. On first installation came up with error -not enough virtual memory- it had only 128Mb on board. Added another 256 MB tried installing again now ,no error message, but gets to 1 minute to go and locks on the "removing any tempory files". Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I have some files tha I want to save as well- suggestions?? Cheers

you should have saved all files before attempting an upgrade from ME to XP....

Or any other type of upgrade....

Can you re-install ME...repair it, don't format or you will lose you data.
Once ME is installed, backup what you want....then proceed to play with XP.

Are you booting into ME and then running the XP setup?

I had issues when i did that. If you boot from the CD you get a much better install

I tried using the upgrade option and after a few tries gave up and did a full install, worked well.
However all my data was backed up.

Well that goes without saying when you do anything like this.
