Ok, I tried to delet IE. I went to add/remove>"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SPI and internet tools" It gives me the option to "Add a component" or "Repair Internet Explorer". Really not what I was looking for. Tried repair internet explorer. No help. Then went to my Computer>C>Program files>internet Explorer folder & deleted that. Then dowloaded IE6 setup & when I went to install it, it came to the part that said "The most recent versions of all items are already installed. It is recommended you exit setup without reinstalling. I reinstalled anyhow & get the same problem. The web site opens, everything looks fine, I have MSN as the hompage, it even changes the news bits that you can click on, now I click on, say, sports & I get the prompt "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down" A details box is provided which shows IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 017f:78015ca2.

I click on close & then get "An error has occured in Internet Explorer. Intenet Explorer will now close. If you continue to have problems please restart your computer.
I am thinking this all started when I switched from AOL to Verizon DSL. But I can be wrong. I also bought a new computer at that time & I had Netscape setup on this one. Never really used IE so I don't exactly no for sure when this started. Just trying to provide you with all the info I can. I did talk to a Gateway tech person & she said to reformat. I really don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Can someone tell me how to delete IE from my computer so that I can reinstall it? I thought I had it deleted but when I went to reinstall it said it was already installed.

I don't understand how to do what you are saying. I would still like to delete IE & reinstall to see if that solves my problem.

When I download the file it saves in in Word. How do I save it so that I can run it?
(BTW, problem with IE is that when I open it I get the prompt an illegal operation has occured & it shuts down.)

I tried that & it still saves it in Microsoft Word & opens up word with a bunch of gobbledygoop.

(Association of url would be corrupted.)

For the time being, rename file extention in Save as dialogue.

Or check out > folder option > zip

I'm still not having any luck, No matter how I save it, it saves it as a Word document. But---I found out something interesting today. Please bare with me.
If I click on the desktop IE icon, it opens IE then the message "This program has performed an illegal operation & will shut down." comes up. Click the close tab & it shuts down IE.
If I click on start>programs>Internet Explorer---same thing happens.
If I click on start>favorites & select one of the favorites (which btw are all saved as IE sites) Internet Explorer opens & WORKS. Any idea what is going on? I have been using the netscape browser which works.

OK, a little more info I discovered.
If I click on start>favorites & select the favorite MSN, (which is also saved as a IE site) I get the "illegal operation has occurred prompt" after IE opens up. It seems that anything that is opening up with MSN is where the problem occurs. Does that help any? I have verizon dsl & I believe I downloaded MSN at that time.

Right-click on your IE icon on your desktop and select 'Properties' from the menu. Once in there, what does it say in the 'Target' field ?

What do you mean by 'Target' field? If you mean what is in the window for home page it is;

No, I mean the target program to open. When you click on a shortcut on the desktop the shortcut icon has to have a target program to open.
