Internet Explorer problem

On my old Gateway computer, I have windows 98 SE. I had AOL but now use Verizon DSL. I downloaded Netscape & generally use that browser. When I go to use IE it will open the internet page but then I get the message "this program has performed an illegal operation & will shut down" When I click ok, it closes the page. I do see on the top when the page opens it will say "Internet Explorer provided by America Online" also the AOL icon is in the corner. I'm thinking because I know longer subscribe to AOL that is why this is happening? I have removed IE & then downloaded IE6 but it comes back the same with the provided by America online on top. I have went in the registry & removed all AOL stuff but that hasn't helped either. Any suggestions?

First thing is to run Hijack This from that link, and have it do a scan and save a log. Post the log here and we will go over it and tell you how to fix the problem. I have seen this before and I can assure you it can be fixed without too much trouble.

What, do you now just want to remove the 'Internet Explorer provided by America Online' line from IE or is IE6 still not working ?

If you are refering to IE6, and not the AOL browser (two different web browsers), this can happen if java and macromedia flash are corrupt. Try downloading those two, if you can, and re-install them.

java=http://www.java.com/en
macromedia=http://www.macromedia.com (which I think got bought by adobe).

What is the homepage set to, that IE is trying to reach? If you go to start>run>eventvwr....are there any relevant errors in the application section related to IE?

When I try to download this it saves it in microsoft word, which doesn't run the program. I get the prompt that Netscape does not know what to do with the file, how would you like to open it.

IE opens up the webpage but then I get the prompt that I mentioned earlier & it shuts the page down--kicks me off the internet.

Downloaded both, no help.

start>run>eventvwr I get Cannot find the fele 'eventvwr(or one of its components) Make sure the path & filename are corret and that all required libraries are available.
Also it doesn't make any difference what I set the homepage to, it gives me the message I said in the first post & kicks me off.

It tries to save it in Word ? HJT should download as a '.zip' archive and you need to extract it to to something like 'c:\hijackthis\' and then extract it. Once extracted, double-click on 'hijackthis.exe' and then click on the 'Do system scan and save log file button'. When you do this, it runs the application, prompts you where to save the file and then opens the file (in '.txt' format). Copy the contents of the '.txt' file and post in here (over as many posts as necessary).

Please DO NOT bump your threads on these forums. Someone will help you, you just need to be patient.

Can you run hijackthis again, check the following items and select 'Fix':

Once you have done so, please re-boot your machine and post a fresh HJT log for us to look at and let us know if you are still having problems. (you might need to re-set your preferences for Netscape).

Ok, thanks & sorry. I did what you said, tried IE & now it does the same. It know longer says internet explorer provided by American Online, but the little Icon in the right top corner that shows that the page is still loading is an AOL icon. It seemed when I first started IE this time it was the windows icon for a few seconds then it changed to the AOL one & the illegal operation thing came up again. Her is what I get when I click on details of that:
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 017f:78015ca2.

I tried to reinstall IE6 before I contacted the forum. It didn't make any difference. Since the changes I tried to run IE6 setup again. I clicked on it after all the fixes etc. It said IE6 is already installed do I want to replace it or something like that. I did & I get the same thing I was getting before. Should I delete all IE & go to the Microsoft site & download IE6 again? How do I delete all of IE?
