Is it possible to wipe a hard disk using only software?
I have a completely dead IBM thinkpad, that will not respond to any boot disk I've used - Windows MSDOS, 98, 2K, XP - or Linux, for that matter. It also will not respond to the IBM recovery CD. This thinkpad died 1/2way through an XP install, and hasn't come back. (I've tried flashing the CMOS, et al)
Is it possible to wipe the hard disk using only software? Or, is it easy enough to crack the case and wipe the drive... and if so, how? I'm not much of a 'hardware' person, really only software... Any advice is appreciated.

I'm not sure I follow, are you surplusing the machine and need the data off the drive before throwing it? I knew a guy that did that kind of stuff. Screwdrivers and a hammer, made damn sure nothing could be read (well, within reason).
If it's not booting off a floppy and you're still trying to install windows, I think it's a lost cause. Wiping the drive won't help you boot if the bios won't post. |

Yeah, I think this computer might be totally hosed. I was trying to upgrade it as a fav to a friend...
So, your assessment is that if I can't get into BIOS, its completely fscked? |

That'd be my guess, bios points to boot devices, be it floppy or hard drive, and if it can't do that, it'll likely never boot again.
If it's just the bios, some places will reflash it for a price, but i'm not sure how to make sure that's the problem before throwing $40 at something like that. |

What does reflashing the BIOS involve? Is that something I can even attempt, or not?

So you can't get into BIOS? The procedure for flashing the BIOS varies. Usually involves moving a jumper, then moving it back. Before you get too involved, decide how much your time is worth, then look at the computer in your hands and ask yourself how much it would be worth even if it were running like new.
