LMHOST w/ firewall & loopback
just installed a sonicwall soho3 on my network. I have a win2k server domain controller, thats hosting a website. The sonic wall does not support loopback, so the LAN computer cannot access the external domain, cause its looping back into the network. I asked the tech, and he said i should use LMHOST files? Wut is he talking about? How would i get it to work?
Thanks alot AIM - grafix616 URL |

The LMHOST file (a sample can usually be found named lmhost.sam in systemroot\windows or winnt etc, the acutal file may be named hosts) is kindof a manual DNS list...
You would put your domain into the list and then give it the local ip address to resolve too, instead of the out bound one... Now because this involves manually editing a file (or distributing a file to) each computer on your domain, this is definately not ideal for a large network... However, if you don't have your own local DNS server (which is a good way around this problem) and you only have a few computers, it should work fine... Here is a link to a good (I just found it for you) file on the lmhost file:: URL To load this hosts file, you must go to your network connection, to properties, tcp/ip properties, advanced, wins, enable lmhosts lookup, and import lmhosts, directing the browse window to your recently modified file... peace, Donzilla Last edited by Donzilla : August 6th, 2003 at 09:09 PM. |
