Machines on same subnet can't ping each other
I have a network consisting of 3 PC's - PC's "A" and "B" run Win 2K Pro and PC "C" runs Win 2K Advanced Server.
IP Addresses are: A - 192.168.0.1 (acts as DHCP Server) B - 192.168.0.140 C - 192.168.0.247 Subnet is 255.255.255.0 for all. "A" can ping "B", and vice versa. "A" can also ping "C", and vice versa. The problem is that "B" and "C" can't ping each other. I've tried rebooting, but it makes no difference. I have a firewall running on "A" - BlackICE PC protection. I tried closing this, and it makes no difference. Does anyone have any ideas why "B" and "C" can't see each other? TIA for any help. Ian |

Are they all connected to each other via a hub?

What is the default gateway on each machine?
Can all 3 ping outside your network? Can all 3 resolve name? What are you using to ping (ip or host or netbios names?) |

Thanks for your replies.
The machines are connected via an 8-port hub. Physical connections seem fine, as machine A can remote control machines B and C (using PC Anywhere) without any problems. Neither B nor C can ping outside the network. Default gateway on each machine was originally not specified. I've changed this to 192.168.0.1 but it makes no difference. Re. name resolution, "A" can ping "B" and "C" by name, and vice versa. Re. what I am using to ping - I'm not sure I fully understand the question, but I have "Enable LMHOSTS Lookup" and "Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP Server". Does this help? Something else I forgot mention - I have a wireless access point also plugged into the hub. I've tried disconnecting this and it makes no difference. Any clues? Ian |

Ping q. What names are you using to ping eg- "ping pcA" or
"ping 192.168....."? What is the response you get from the pings that dont work? |

If I ping using a name I get "host not found". If I try pinging using an ip address I get a timeout

Something is broken. Switch ports on hub and test (i u havent already). Otherwise, re-install tcp stack.

OK I've switched ports on the hub, and un-installed and re-installed TCP/IP on machine C. After a reboot it now has an IP address of 169.254.73.170. If I try to ipconfig/release I get the message
"All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and cannot be released" If I manually change the IP address to 192.168.0.55 I get the same situation as before - can ping 192.168.0.1 but nothing else. If I reboot it picks up an address of 169.254.73.170 again. Netbios from DHCP server is also switched off. ??? |

I finally cracked it. "B" and "C" were running Ontrack System Suite (but with firewall and file checking disabled). When I removed it, everything was fine.
Something to remember for the future! Thanks for all your suggestions. |
