Hi all, found you on a Google search and thought you might be able to help me out. Until recently, I had a working XP Pro machine. Due to power surges from the recent blackout, I lost my motherboard and processor due to the fact that I had no surge protection on the machine (yea, yea, boo and hiss away ). So I go to replace the motherboard (home-built system), only to find that XP won't boot anymore. Tried bootdisks, couldn't run a repair from the CD, nothing. So I formatted my backup drive to get XP installed so I could copy files over to the backup drive, then perform a ghost once everything was in place, then continue to restore. Have a fresh, clean install of XP Pro on my HD that I usually use for backup purposes, and have been using that to access my two original HD's (one for OS and programs, other for data).***When I've tried to access the My Documents folder from my original HD, I couldn't due to encryption of that folder. So I went, changed the ownership permissions to my new account on the backup HD for that folder, and still can't read files or copy them that folder. Checked the permissions, and I have Full Control of the folder. Is there something else that I'm missing\not doing to get this to work? And is there something that I can do to recover my data from that folder, as there is highly irreplaceable stuff on there. |

Folder opens, I can view the contents, can't open the files\copy them over elsewhere. Various files in there, .txt, .mpg, etc.

may have to right click the file and select open with, and select the program which created the files, if still dont work, and if they are not to big try to email them to yourself, i have found this to work on files that were protected.

Well, I have a problem. My DSL is now not being recognized by XP ever since I did the reinstall. And yes, the USB that the DSL uses is enabled in my BIOS on the new board.

a call to your internet provider might be what you need to get back on the net.

I don't know....my parents are running thier connections just fine. It seems to be something with my equipment, possibly something screwed with the new mobo. I've been thinking of ordering my old board from a site and taking my current one back, just so I can get to my files and disable the encryption.

Would copying the contents of the Crypto directory from my old user profile to a new one allow me access to the encrypted files?
