map drive error

Excuse this very stupid question. I come from a Mac environment and am now in a corporate PC world.

I just installed some Group1 software on a Windows 2000 server. The software requires that certain components be installed on the server while the rest are installed from the client machine.

When I try to run set up from the client machine I recieve an error that the drive must be mapped.

At the moment I do not have a single Windows book and am under the gun, any help would be appreciated. The path in the run window is as follows.

"\\Ap_doc1\DOC1 Suite\client\Setup.exe"

I suspect its looking for something like C/Program Files or something....or should it. Seems to me that should be part of the installer.

Thanks for your help

Right click on the My Comuter icon on the desktop and select map network drive. From there, select a drive letter, insert the file location you reference, then hit ok or enter.

Thanks for the quick response. That worked.

I got a couple of books ordered so any more questions I have (hopefully) wont be so basic.

Cheers

Well my books have not come in yet and my problem continues a little further down the line.

After mapping the drive to z I was able to connect to the server and the program appeared to install properly on the client machione.

A desktop folder was created with 5 shortcut icons. Clicking on any of the icons produces an error

The item ale.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed
or moved so this shortcut will no longer work properly

Do you want to delete this shortcut

Right clicking on an icon to view its properties I get-

Z:\dllexe\ale.exe

clicking okay confirms the error with another error Target path is incorrect.

I am not sure what I could have done wrong, I did not type in the path I used the browse window.

Thanks for your suggestions

Have you tried this using a different drive letter?

No, what I did do just now is open the folder holding the shortcut icons and create new ones manually. These are now valid but I am worried that this workaround is going to get me into trouble as when I tried to open the help file it could not be found using the z mapped path. I had to click through the network to find it.

I think when I mapped the drive z I took it in one folder too deep.
In other words I put the whole path including the folder on the drive input field and nothing in the folder input field.

Is there anyway to edit z ?

Thanks

Send a message via ICQ to computer
go into command prompt and type:

subst z: "\\path\to\file\directly"

and then it will remap Z:/ for that session to a new place, once tested you can then permently remap Z:/

You can also map manually on the command line by using the "NET USE" command. Typing NET USE just in itself will give you options/argument listings.

I tried this and program did not open. I am going to uninstall and see if I can reinstall correctly. Can I delete settings for Z drive?

Maybe I am too far in the dark here

I went to start - run typed in NET USE, a window attempted to open and closed immediately.

This has to be used in a command window.
Go to start, run and type cmd and it will give you a command window (use to be a dos prompt)
