I logged into my computer this morning and found what looks like a system message. I can't figure out if it is a virus or an advertisement...neither of which I would be happy about. The message reads: Message from JANE DOE to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the x's were actually my IP address) on 10/16/2002 12:13:21 I REALLY NEED TO TALK TO YOU CALL ME NOW!!! I WILL BE ONLINE FOR A FEW MORE HOURS HURRY BABE!!! HOT LADIES LOOKING FOR SEX ARE ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW!!! 1000's CALLING DAILY TO GET LAID!!! CALL 1-900-745-1175 must be 18 or over!!! Can anyone tell me what this is and how it got on my computer? Thank you in advance, Piet |

It looks like spam (or a rather tasteless joke) which was sent to you via Wintendo's SMB protocol (afaik). Get yourself a firewall and block inbound connections, that should prevent it from happening again.

realnowhereman,
Thanks for the reply. I will look into the firewall. I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about what Wintendo is? I have never heard of it. Thanks. Piet |

Wintendo: the M$ product which you are using which some people (at M$) consider to be a usable O$ although the only thing it can be reasonably used for is gaming (and even that only under the risk of BSODs which are a speciality of Wintedo (they indicate that a user has run out of luck and needs to hit the reset button to start a new game)).

I am not sure if I understand. Are you suggesting that I am using a game called Wintendo? I don't play games on my computer and I have never heard of Wintendo! Are hackers able to use Wintendo to get into other's computers? Sorry to know so little about this and I do appreciate your help.

and to the ones using WinXp -> disable this service -> Messenger
yes this service ownz ^___^ to send anyone a meesage you only need to know his/her ip or wins name just type in cmd "net send ip_adress message_body" and voilla the big popping up window appears on that computer ^_^ And the second winner is "Universal Plug & Play" service -- this one leaves port 5000 opened and vulnerable for attacks, and hell yes mcf(the built in firewall) doesn't block this port :| just like many other p.Firewalls ![]() Um and the grand prize goes to The Windows Magnificent Kernel which needs to be fully rewritten, cause it got so many bugs that even M$ does not know every one of them ;] |

Uninstalling Messenger
I talked to a Microsoft support-person and I virtually ate his ear because of my frustration of not being able to control what goes on in my own computer.
I was told that it's impossible to uninstall the Messenger from IE 6 - but that it would be with SP1. Because of that I changed to Netscape... Later I downloaded SP1 for XP - but I haven't tried to uninstall Messenger... -now I don't have the need... Seems to me that MS is pissing against the wind here... (danish expression I think) |

To be honest, I wasn't sure what you guys were talking about. Just got my first bit of spam by it today. Simple enough to disable it though, no complaints here.

Pllbbt... check out the site of the people who wrote the spamware. They have a customer survey! Yayyy! (I love screwing with illegitimate marketing surveys).
[shamelessly trolling] Actually.. I don't get many BSODs any more (WinME) while I'm playing. Usually, the game just "blinks" off the screen. Sometimes everything freezes, but BSODs are fairly uncommon. Guess since I don't have WinXP/NT/2000, I don't have to worry about it I haven't "downgraded" to XP yet (and never will )[/shamelessly trolling] |
