Microsoft Outlook Express Help needed with Windows 2000
Hi,
Okay here is the scenario. I was on a friends computer which is running Win 2000, they use outlook express for their email. When they bought the computer someone set up their user names for the computer but spelt them wrong so I set up a new user name for them, and deleted the wrong one! When I logged onto the new user name, all the settings for email had gone, all emails in their folders had gone and all account settings had gone. I have managed to setup their account settings again but they dont have the emails back into their folders. WHere are the emails stored and what do I do to get them back in the right place? Please email me or leave me a message as I need to sort this ASAP. Thanks Leigh |

unless i am wrong, which i could be, the messeges are gone, by deleting the account, you delete the mail, can check the temp files folder, but dont hold out hope, with outlook and outlook express the messeges are downloaded from the server, the server dumps the mail, you are left with the only copy. if you had the mail in folders, or archived it would probably still be in the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express
folder . if they were in the inbox i dont think they can be revived. |

look for files of type .dbx, I don't think they are gone they are just under a different identity.

In W2K outlook express messages are stored under \Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<identity guid>\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ and each mail folder has it's own .dbx file. You have to un-hide system and hidden files & folders in Explorer to see these folders.
If you didn't delete the old profile the old mail folders should still be there. In the current identity, if you create an identical mail folder you can shut down OE, then copy the previous mail folder file (from the old identity) into the new identity, overwriting the .dbx of the same name, then restart OE. It's probably a good idea to back up the current identity files first if there is anything in the new mail account of any value. |
