i've got this problem... i have a HD bay (connected in IDE1) along with a cdrom. when i place a hd in and reboot my machine, startup shows that my cdrom and hd cannot be detected... how come? when i remove the hd from the bay the cdrom gets detected... i'm using a win2k prof os hheeelllppp

sounds to me that this is not a OS issue but a hardware one. It would appear to me that the hard drive is not configured correctly as master or slave [if cdrom is master] or you have a device compatablity issue where the two will not talk. Don't use cable select but master/slave with ide devices.
