modem to modem connect problems

I wish to dialin to my windows 2000 machine using a windows 98se laptop. I have outlined the problem below:

I have a windows 2000 pro machine (from the information i can gleam, windows 2000 will only allow 1 dialin at a time), which i intend to use as a dialin machine so that i can access it while i am away from home via dialin.

All well and good one might say... well i set that up and then came to dialling in on my laptop with win98se. I dialled in, it autheticated and did the standard log on to network. So everything appears OK.

On the main windows 2000 machine i opened the connection details and it showed the client and server ip addresses. All well and good i thought.

I went to laptop and then tried to access a share i had on the win2k machine, nope it wouldn't see that other machine. Ok so lets try pinging the other machine, neither machine will ping the other machine's IP addy.

At this stage i had it setup with TCP/IP. I then did some research online and found out that win98 requires NETBEUI (although i have not verified this elsewhere yet, anyone able to confirm?). So i tried that ... still no joy.

I used IPCONFIG to find out what the full connection details are and found that the win2k machine shows subnet of 255.255.255.255 and the win98 machine shows subnet of 255.255.0.0
This to me seems wrong, so i looked for the place on the win2k machine to change the subnet for the connection and i can't find anywhere to do it.

Is anyone able to help me out with this one?
Many Thanks
Freddy

I don't know too much about networks and stuff... But I never heard of a modem to modem connection. I think you need to get a router or a hub. Something like that.

Yes Win2K can be setup as a dial-up server and can be setup to allow remote connections

The login to network box in the dialup connection is definately ticked? Have you ticked the allowed protocols to include NetBEUI.

Win98 can use TCP/IP for network sharing no problems. You shouldnt need NetBEUI.

You should be able to change this within Network connections -> [Your Network] -> Properties -> Internet Protocol [TCP/IP]

Oh and #define Gangsta. If you don't know what you are talking about its best to not say any thing rather than post misleading information. We are here to help people, not mislead them and misinform them.

Re: Re: modem to modem connect problems

Thanks Andreas

I have ticked all boxes to allow ipx/spx Netbeui and tcp/ip.

I have looked on the win2k machine, enabled my LAN connection... which makes me able to adjust the tcp/ip connections. I adjusted it to make sure they are correct... however when dialling in it sets up its own subnet and ip address, this it seems changes every time you reboot the computer. It is possible to make the client machines have static but i can't get the main dialin win2k machine to keep a static when it is being dialled.

There is already alot of misleading information out there and that is one of the biggest problems.

Last night i installed File and print sharing for ms networks on the win98 client machine. Then dialled up and waited 10 - 15minutes. Network is still not browsable and not able to ping either machine... however RealVNC was able to establish a connection based on ip address, but then RealVNC for some reason manages to usually get a connection through most things.

Thanks
Freddy
