MS Config bootlog side effect

MS Config bootlog side effect
I just finished watching a podcast on the MS channel 9

The presenter mention and option of MSconfig. that allows you turn on for the next boot

device driver Loading display on bootup and to log the boot process to a file.

I tried it out and the device driver did display but partway through the boot it blue screened.

The auto fix mode was offered on the reboot and I accepted. It didn't show any detail but tried to load a restore point( i think). it rebooted and the flags had not been cleared so it the boot sequence repeated. on the second recovery it finally rebooted back into windows.

Has any one seen symptoms like this? I makes me fearful using those features again.



Running win 7 on a Asus x54c 6G mem 500G HD/ running with readboost in an class 10 sd card in the internal slot.

Here is what the boot log captured. I can't interpret it because I have nothing to compare it too.

I don't know if its from the good boot or the bad one. This was supposed to be the baseline.

Not sure why that would have caused your PC to bluescreen or enter startup repair mode; unless perhaps you added a switch to the boot option you shouldn't have. Typically people will use msconfig to isolate a problematic piece of software or driver. In general though, you want to stay away from msconfig unless you know what you're doing. Is there something you were wanting to accomplish?

The objective was to understand what happen during the boot processes to be able to tune up system that are slow. Basic pure research.

I would have expected recording the boot process to be a fair benign actions. Especially since I was doing it with a MS program that has been in Windows for over a decade.

Ah, well it "should" be a fairly harmless endevaour to simply log the boot process. In my many years of removing viruses and "speeding" up computers, unfortunatley msconfig isn't incredibly useful; that's just my opinion though.

RAM is so cheap now-a-days that you'd be better off adding more RAM to to the system if you really want to speed it up. MSCONFIG can help decrease the boot time if there are several pieces of software starting with Windows that don't need to be there (i.e., IM applications, etc..), but that tends to be it.

Getting rid of brandware. The whole thing started because I was get gid of the
Branded software from the laptop maker. Some of it is fluff and some of it supports their hardware.

Why don't you try manually doing a boot log bootup eliminating msconfig from the picture. msconfig is merely a tool that changes various system and startup parameters anyway, I doubt msconfig has anything to do with the error you got, it was probably lurking there all along.
