I tried to make my machine multiboot Windows 98, Windows 2K pro, and Windows XP. All the OS are on different partitions and I installed them in the correct order (98 -> 2K -> XP). Windows 98 and XP boot up just fine, but when I try to boot Windows 2k, I get the following error:
"Windows cannot start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: Load needed DLLs for kernel." Anyone know how to fix this problem? |

you can use a boot floppy and fix the mbr, also in xp msconfig under boot.ini you can select check all boot paths, it may or may not fix it, but is worth a shot. if memory serves, and it dont allways, i think you need to have atleast service pack 2 on win 2k before installing xp as a multi boot, i know nt4 requires sp4.

No service packs required unless you are installing W2K in multiboot with NT4 and NT is using ntfs. Then you need sp4 for NT since W2K converts all ntfs partitions it finds to ver5.
Do nothing to the MBR !!! It is working [since 98 and XP work] so this is not the source of the issue. Did this begin after the XP install??? I would suspect some XP files got written to the W2K partition. How to fix: make a folder called backup at the root [c:]. Copy ntldr and ntdetect to this folder. Reinstall W2K. Make sure it works. Copy the files from the backup folder back to the root. Now XP will boot again. If XP does not boot correctly but W2K does it means you overwrote W2K with XP originally. Just reinstall XP and you will be fine assuming you make sure XP goes on the third partition only. The reason for the copy of the two files is there iare the W2K versions and the XP versions. The xp versions can boot both W2K and XP but the W2K version can not boot XP. |
