Multiple Network Connections in WinXP
Anyone know how to specify multiple network connection configurations in WinXP? I got a home lan where everything is taken care of through DHCP, and a work network where I need to use specific IP/gateway/etc.
I noticed in the TCP/IP configuration, you could specify an alternate configuration, but the OS seems to ignore it. Different device profiles doesn't do the trick either. Anyone ever manage two network configs? |

Setup the primary settings tab to DHCP. XP will use your alternate settings if it cannot reach a DHCP server, so enter your static IPs for work there.
(If there was no alternate settings, it would dice one in the "microsoft APIPA range" 169.254.0.0/16)

I had tried that with no luck. I think the problem was that my home lan was via a wireless adapter, and the office was via a hardline. The trick so far seems to be to manually disable the hardline when it's not in use, otherwise the OS can't seem to sort anything out.

Since network settings are per NIC and not per HOST, you cannot use the above for switching between wlan and wire.
Manually disabling one is one option. We were discussing a similar problem in the linux forums recently (without a working solution though). The guy asking there had his windows software setup to disable his WLan automatically if the AP is not available and needed the linux counterpart. But this feature is afaik not built in XP, it must be specific to his wlan drivers. Maybe you can get some third party software for convenience. |
