Unhappy NET SEND problem

You know those annoying 'Messenger Messages' that sometimes crop up, advertising moronic sites with webcams on them? Well, I got one of those today, so I pinged the site, grabbed the IP and proceeded to send them a message back, only it didn't work.

I typed : net send [IP] [message]

I gave me an error: the message alias could not be found on the network.

I tried sending myself a message but it gave me the same message. I have never done this successfully. Does anyone know what's wrong? I run WINXP Home Ed.

ps. do you send it in the command prompt, because I went to run then 'cmd' not 'command'. Does it really matter?

You should use cmd to bring up the command interpreter. Most of the time you wont be able to send messages back since they use programs that just send them out. They don't have to be using windows to do this. You can do it from Linux or anything really as long as you have the right program.

Using net send over the internet doesn't work a lot of the time. The right TCP and UDP ports need to be open between the computers, and such.
As for not being able to send yourself a message, have you checked to make sure that you have the messenger service active?
Programs-->Administrative tools-->Services-->messenger service
