Question networking 98 and XP

I've done this once, but can't remember how. I have an XP machine and a 98 machine. The wizard of networking XP won't see the 98 machine, but the 98 machine can look into XP and open anything marked shared. Ideas?

Sorry, neglected to mention we're using a hub connected to a cable modem.

Talking

Didn't want to try that, didn't know what it would do to the already set up cable modem. Ran out of options, so I did it. Worked! Didn't mess up the cable modem either. Thanks!

No assistance!

I have completed the procedure to the letter, as indicated, and run the network wizard on both machines. This link contained absolutely NO information whatsoever to help with the problem.
My win XP machine cannot read my Win98 machine. I have tried, retried, and tried again. i have run it, run it again, and run it a 3rd time. Still no luck.
I have enabled and disabled and enabled and disabled my firewall on XP machine, all to no avail. It simply WILL NOT READ THE WIN98 MACHINE.

Can you please provide some real assistance here please?

Thanks

98 with xp

I've been trying to do this too and can't seem to get things right. Likewise, the 98 machine can work with XP, but XP can't see 98. I have the workgroup set the same and have different names for the computers. All the names and labels and whatever are set and I have sharing set too. I'm not sure what exactly I'm not doing right. The steps in that TechNet didn't seem to work. The steps don't seem to match up. Is it maybe for pro instead of home? So, can anyone help me with this. It's pretty frustrating!

Thanks

Networking XP and Win 9x

Both machines have matching user accounts and passwords and users logged in.
Both machines have different computer names (use simple names with no spaces).
Both machines have the same workgroup name. (such as: workgroup)
At least one computer has shared files or folders.
Machines are connected via: crossover cable, hub, switch or router.
Both machines have TCP/IP installed.
Both machines have the same IP addressing scheme.
Example: 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11
Note: if using a router, DHCP will issue an IP address and a subnet mask automatically. Just have “obtain an IP address automatically” checked in the TCP/IP properties.
Both machines have the same subnet mask
Example: 255.255.255.0
If using a router, the Default Gateway should be set to 192.168.0.1.
These both can be easily checked by:
Example for XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > ipconfig /all
Example for Windows 9x: Start > Programs > MsDos Prompt > winipcfg
Both machines have File and Printer Sharing turned on.
Commercial firewalls on both machines should be configured with trusted IP addresses. Or disable firewall (not recommended).
Example: 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11
If using XP's built-in Firewall: go to Start > Control Panel > right-click Network Connections > Properties > Advanced > Settings > Services > Add > enter File Sharing for the description > enter 127.0.0.1 for the IP address > enter 445 for both Port numbers > make sure the TCP radio button is selected > click OK > put a checkmark next to the new service to enable it .
Can you ping the local loopback address on each machine?
Example for XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > ping 127.0.0.1
Example for (Windows 9x): Start > Programs > MsDos Prompt > ping 127.0.01
If you receive “request timed out”, you have TCP/IP configuration problems, incorrectly installed or defective network card (NIC).
Can the computers ping each other?
Example from the 192.168.0.10 machine: ping 192.168.0.11
If not, you have connectivity problems (cabling, hub, firewall blocking, etc).
