Hey,
I have a PC in my room with Windows 2000 Pro on it and a laptop kickin' around the house with Windows XP home on it. They're both connected to a hub which is in respect connected to a cable modem, and I've had no problems accessing the internet on either, with absolutely no networking involved aside from plugging them both in. But recently I've decided I'd like to have some file and print sharing, and I can't seem to get it to work. From the Win2k end, it looks easy - as long as you're trying to network to Win2k. From the WinXP end, it looks easy - as long as you're trying to network to WinXP. Trying to get them to talk to each other, however, has me ripping out my hair. All I want is file sharing and print sharing, is that too much to ask? Keep in mind, I have no previous networking experience. Thanks in advance for your help, Derej |

2002 & xp
I had the same issue. I ended up installing the netbeui protocol on the xp machine and all is well. Well, better anyway. I can connect to the xp from the 2000 pro macine but I'm locked out of the 2000 pro machine. It works one way at least.

Read this article.
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...0&Product=winxp There is a feature in XP called "Simple File Sharing". You will need to read this article and change some setting that work for you. |

for just a simple file share/printer share network, go to control panel, then system, click the advanced tab, then give the computer a description, if it does not have one. then click the change button the 2k machine by default will say "workgroup" for the workgroup, xp will say "MSHOME" if you run the network wizard, just make them both the same, can name it whatever you like. it will welcome you to the new network and tell you a reboot is needed, reboot the 2k. the xp close the system properties, tell it you do not wish to reboot yet. close the control panel. go to start, then run, type services.msc scroll down the list find internet connection firewall(xp firewall) right click, select properties, set the startup type to disabled, if you have added the ipv6 internet connection firewall do it the same way. now reboot. any file you wish to share , right click, select sharing and security, follow the directions, the printer, go to control panel printers and faxes, right click the printer, same as the files. i recommend you disable third party firewalls untill you have the network running. but recommend even with a router have a software firewall also, nortons is the most simple to run on a network, kerio is good, but you will have to adjust the settings.
