No Start Menu in XP - no sign of Virus

Hi,

I don't seem to have a virus but I don't have a start menu in xp. I checked the task manager and all tasks running appear to be the standard tasks. Any ideas? This just happened one day after restarting my computer. It didn't even crash. I have an updated version of Norton and haven't ever had problems with this computer.

Right after I restarted I got an error saying that a dll file was missing. I replaced the dll file and now there is just nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I put in a windows xp startup floppy disk, turned the computer on and typed in win (then hit enter) at the A/ prompt and got an error message - so that's it. Still no start menu or icons when I log in to windows from any of my users. Task manager shows all normal background tasks.

Unhappy

I seem to be having the same problem. Every time i restart my computer my desktop icons, taskbar, and start menu will not load, but i can access the task manager. I have tried running XP's system restore three times, and it works until i restart or shut down my computer again.

I have also searched for the sysu.exe file or any files related to it on my computer, and there are none. On top of this, I have a wireless network and the computer with the problem will not load the networking programs needed to access the internet, so i cannot update my virus scan program. The desktop does load in safe mode, but i still cannot load my networking programs.

PLEASE help me, because i have exhausted all other resources.

Hi SCcoffeeboy,

Have you tried scanning for spyware and adware. It's a good first step. Download Spybot and Adaware (links are below), burn them to a CD and install them on the affected machine. You wont be able to update them until you get your internet connection restored, but it's worth a shot.

Just a suggestion, this thread is like 8 months old. Post a new subject with your results.

Tom

hey, a friend of mine has a similar problem:

- no icons or taskbar on desktop.. just blank screen with her desktop color

another problem is that she cant even access task manager with ctrl+alt+del ..nothing opens when she presses that. there is a mouse pointer but when u left or right click nothing happens.

we tried starting up in safe mode but nothing happens when we press F8 on startup.

does anyone have any idea bout what we can do?

thanks!

dude check the date on this thread ! it was like ancient stuff !

anways.. what os are you using ? xp or me ? you got to keep f8 pressed after you clear the ram mem test. asuming this has failed too, you might have to re-install. try booting form a floppy (win98 bootdisk available at www.bootdisk.com) and check the file system. but i doubt the fiel systems is the problem. hope this helps...
cheers ..

Whoah this thread is old.....

More details please. What is happening ? Have you tried running an up to date virus scan ?

Posting that you can't find the sysu.exe file in the processes tab doesn't really give me much to go on. Oh, and welcome to DevShed.

Welcome to Dev Shed.

I'm sad too... because after reading a few posts, I realized it was from a few years ago. Please, in the future, start a new thread instead of dragging one up from a few years back.

This would probably better belong in the Antivirus forum. I will ask a mod to move it for you.

somegirl61636 I think you should post over in THIS section and let me take a look. There is not a single program that kills everything.

And yes superantispyware is a good program.
