Question on Upgrade CD's of XP Pro from Win98
I want to know before I purchase an upgrade CD of XP Pro for my mom's computer.
She has Win98 and I don't think it is SE, AND the Registration Code has OEM in it (xxxxx-OEM-xxxxx-xxxxx). With this in mind, does anyone know if the Upgrade CD to XP Pro will reject this version of Win98? |

Take a look on the microsoft website, they have a page somewhere that describes the eligibility requirements.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend an upgrade form 98 - unless it is a clean install of 98 with nothing else added. I have tried upgrading a well used install of 98 before and had nothing but problems. If you can afford it, buy the full retail version of XP. Otherwise, save her files, format and reinstall 98, then upgrade to XP.
I even had a Microsoft Certified instructor admit this was the best way during a "Managing Windows XP" course. |

as long as you have a cd with a microsoft operating system on it, or even floppies with windows 3.1 ect.... a upgrade version is just as good as a full install, you drop in the cd for xp, boot the computer, it will format, and install xp just fine, the only difference, if you do a clean install instead of a upgrade, you will be asked to insert your previous copy of windows just long enough to let it see it was a windows os disk, you can use a format and recovery cd from hp, compaq,...ect... or borrow a copy of 98,95, from a buddy, i never buy the full install, i am to cheap.
