router to a switch..
hello,
i have a networking question... i have a router--and connected to a port on that router is a computer. another port on the router is a switch. the switch has 1 computer on it. now for my question.... when i get on the computer that is connected directly to the router, it kicks the computer on the switch off the internet... what's going on here? can i only have router->switch->comps ? thanks, -sean

It probably has something to do with the IPs that are being assigned to the computers. Check to make sure that the IPs are different for both computers. Are you letting the router dynamically assign IPs or are you setting things up statically? The router should handle things dynamically but since you throw a switch in there it might be giving the router trouble. Do you need the switch? Some routers have switches built in.

the router assigns IPs with DHCP.
i need a switch because i run a cat5 from the router 50 feet up to my room which splits into 2 connection (currently only using 1 port on the switch, though)... i looked in the router admin it had 2 different ips for the two computers... :S thanks, -sean |
