!!Sound Problem!!!!Freezing Problems!!

first of all i want to talk about my freeezing problem. i first started out with windows ME(Milleniam Edition) and everything was working just fine. Then after a year i finally got dsl internet that was connected to my downstairs computer(think called lan), then my computer started to freeze a bit but like five or six times a month. Then after a while I bought a Geforce 4 64meg graphics card, Then everything started to freeze all the time. Then a few months i got fed up with this problem so i got it upgraded or mabe not upgraded but downgraded to windows 98 because 98 is better and plus i got it reformated/recovered, but the problem is stilll there. And now my sound doesnt work either i think i dont have a sound driver but i looked everywhere to find one but I dont know which one is right for me. Please help me with this sound problem because its more important(Games). Good thing this freezing problem doesnt occur when im playing games, but only sometimes. Also this freezing problem mostly orrcurs when im on the net. I think mabe to do something with my motherboard or my memory since the net takes up alot of memory. Someone please help me with this problem.

first on the freezing problem, how much ram do you have, how big is your hard drive, and how much free space is left on it?
2nd: if you could list the name and model number of your computer, could probably look up a driver for you, if no name or number will have to go about it a bit different.

that link has everything you need to know about your computer, and it being a hp, it should have come with a recovery cd, i sugest you use it, the computer you listed comes with a 40gig hard drive, if there are no partitions on the drive windows 98 will not work properly, it is supposed to be for drives / partitions up to 32gig, it will work on larger, but causes problems.and also if you have the restore cd for that computer it has the software bundle for it, with the drivers. windows ME is by far not my choice for operating systems, but is better than 98 for a few applications, namely the on-board defag, sfc on windows 98 is a flaw not the great thing novice users think it is, read the microsoft site for the reasons they dumped it, for no other reason than "easier" use your format and recovery disk for the hp, will save alot of crap since ,quote.

umm... ok installed the driver there and put it in my c:\win2kdrivers folder. Then i went to my device manager and removed the sound devices that said had errors while installing. And then i rebooted my pc. then i saw this new device detected and then it installed and it did install. but only one thing went wrong something about my "gameport joystick". I dont even have joystick. also rite now my sound doesnt work either mabe because of that joystick. So when i try to install it it saids search for best devices? and i say yes and then it goes to this menu i had, b4 i installed those drivers and i tried to direct it to win2k folder but it said there was nothing there. My sound doesnt work!!!

has a list of all the hardware that came in that pc.
in your first post you said you had windows 98, now it looks like you have windows 2000, which one is it?
