strange login problem-please help.

This morning when I booted win2k server up, I logged in and it started loading the desktop, but didn't get to the point where it loads icons, and then it showed the "Saving Your Settings" dialog box that you get when logging off. At this point it took me right back to the "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del To Log In" screen. After this, it showed a window saying "At least one service or driver failed to load during system startup, use event viewer to view event log for details".

It does the same thing in safe mode also, even with command prompt.

I have tried repairing the installation twice. I have also tried using "fixmbr" and "fixboot" in the recovery console, and this didn't fix it. I created a boot disk off of someone elses XP Pro machine, ran it, and it said HAL.dll is missing or corrupt. So I extracted it from the 2k setup cd and replaced the existing one. Still didn't fix it.

I tried finding a service in the recovery console that may be telling my system to log off as soon as it logs in so I can disable it, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Basically, I just need to find a way to get the system up and limping at least, so I can save important files before I reformat.

Note: I have been refering to Mark Manasi's book on Win2k Server, 4th edition for help.

sorry for the length...

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, briank

You could try installing a 2nd instance of W2K to a different folder, like W2KTEMP instead of WINNT. Then boot into the new installation and if you don't have a hardware problem you should be able to get your important stuff off the disk.

With basic disks, non-raid, I've even added a new drive and installed windows to the new drive, and change the old drive to be the non-booting drive. Then you can quickly copy everything to the new drive. This idea probably won't work with raid or dynamic disks.

On important servers I usually take the time to make a 2nd partition and install a 2nd instance when setting up the server. The couple times it's saved me has made it worth it
