switch 98 and XP drives
Hi. I just got an XP system with a 40 G drive. I want to move my 60 G (on W98) drive over and make it the XP drive, and have the 40 G drive boot on 98 for some DOS games I still play, and other programs that I love that don't work on XP. I was able to get the 98 drive to boot up as the master, but when I tried to format the 40 gig drive, it wasn't recognized at all by DOS, 98, or FDISK. I'm assuming Dell went ahead and made it NTFS.
What I want to do is this: Format D: (40 gigs) Install 98 on D: Install XP on C: and make the system Dual Boot. (am willing to format if neccessary) How can I get the 40 gig drive to be recognized and formatted in FAT 32? |

If the drive is NTFS (and a recent Dell/XP I got was NTFS from Dell), I think you have to remove the existing NTFS partition first, then create a new partition. You should be able to do this with fdisk.

I tried using FDISK. It only recognizes one hard drive (the 60 gig).
I wanted to completely remove the partition and start from scratch, but it can't find the 40 gig drive. |

delpart
There is an old NT utility called delpart.exe available by doing a quick google search for it.
It removes NTFS partitions easily. |

You could use the XP installer to remove the partition too. I thought fdisk could remove non-dos partitions but maybe not.

what are the jumper settings for the drives, and also list the order such as ide1 60gig master, 40gig slave, ide2 cd cable select???? do you have a XP install disk, or a format and recovery cd? it makes a difference when you are tring to dual boot.

The jumper settings for both drives are cable select. I have the 60 gig booting up as the primary under 98. If I move the 40 gig to the primary on the cable, it boots up XP.
I do have an XP install disk, but I need to install 98 on the D: drive first. I'll try getting the delpart utility. |

if both of the drives are sharing one ide controller set the 60 gig (98) as master, and the 40 gig(xp) as slave, dropin the xp cd and either repair or install xp, if you do not format you wont loose your files on xp.make sure you select the 40 gig drive as the install location for the repair/install of xp. cable select may or may not work ok for you, but master / slave should keep it all straight.
the boot record for xp will be placed on the c drive with 98 to give you the boot options menu when you boot up from now on. |

Thanks for the advice, but I want the 60 gig drive to be XP (currently 98) and the 40 gig drive to be 98 (currently XP). The problem I'm having is that the 40 gig drive can't be formatted.
I found some software that sets up the hard drive, though. (Maxtor). This seems to be working, and should let me format in FAT32. Thanks everyone for your help! :-) |
