Does this always happen, or just some of the time? Does it seem related to any software running in the background? When did it start? What OS are you running?
http://www.ltcom.com/page/FAQ/WinXP...%20Shutdown.htm mentions a Microsoft patch for a specific XP shutdown problem, check to see if it fits your circumstances.

You need to give more information, we aren't psychic and magically able to see what's happening with your computer.

Gazmysta,

My experience with this problem is that there usually is a program running in the background that refuses to shut down. Sometimes after 10 seconds of so, a box will come up saying program so and so refuses to shut down, do you wish to manually shut it down.

Do you ever get this type of alert or does the shut down prompt just disapear and nothing happens for a whole minute or so?

What version of windows? If it's 9x/Me, search the MS Knowledgebase for shutdown problems, there were many patches issued over time.

If it's NT/2K/XP make sure you have all the current SP's, and if you are running server apps like Exchange/SQL Server make sure they are up to date too. There have been problems in the past where a server shutdown could take 10-20 minutes with an older version of Exchange server.
