Unable to connect to the Internet on dorm LAN
Hey guys
I'm working on a piece of crap computer, but I'm having difficulty having it connect to the internet with Windows XP I am unable to pull up any networked computers and am unable to connect to the Internet. I am able, however, to ping sites (using the ping command with run), and I'm getting responses of about 50 MS and 50 TTL. I've tried everything and am still unable to pull up the internet. When I plug a site into the address bar, it pulls up a ping address (connecting to 68.124..etc), but it never ever pulls up a page and gives me an error message. Any ideas? Please and thank you. -Steven |

You say you are in a dorm. Don't you have some "How to connect your computer to the Internet" manual? We did at my college. See if there is some automatic configuration script you need to run to use the LAN.
Also, which error do you get? Is it just the "Couldn't find page" error, or something else? Have you clicked the "Detect Network Settings" link on the error page? |

Yeah, they do have a pamphlet, but it's nothing I haven't done already. There isn't an automatic script or anything. I get a "couldn't find page" error, but that's after a minute of "loading" and "connecting to *some ip addres*...". I can ping other servers and get a response, but I can't pull up any internet material. I have tried nearly everything, I got a "winsockfix" off the internet, and hopefully that'll work, but I don't know if that's it. Please, any help. |

When you ping, do you ping sites, or ip addresses? Have you tried connecting to an ip address you know on the internet, rather than a url?
