Unable to Delete a File of zero size!
I have this icon sitting on my desktop that has been there for a year. When I attempt to delete it, I get the following message:
"Cannot Delete File: Cannot read from source file or disk." I don't know how it ever got there, probably off some CD that happened to be in use back then. Properties show it to be zero size. I'm getting tired of looking at it and my desktop is cluttered enough even without it. LOL Anybody got an eraser that will work on an LCD screen? ![]() |

Hi dahawk and welcome to DevShed. I'm guessing that you are using Windows ?? Have you tried to delete the file by using the command prompt ? Or, you could always delete it by using a freeware program, either Delete Doctor or Move on Boot. I'm more concered with how it was left there in the first place - do you run anti-virus scans regularly ? This should really have been posted in the Windows forum - I'll ask one of the mods of the lounge if they will kindly move it over for you.

I've seen this happen before on a rare circumstance. Deleting from the command prompt should work.

"I'm guessing that you are using Windows ?? " Correct. "Have you tried to delete the file by using the command prompt ?" No. I would need step by step procedure to use the command prompt. "Or, you could always delete it by using a freeware program." I may give this a try, but would suspect command prompt route might be simpler. "I'm more concered with how it was left there in the first place - do you run anti-virus scans regularly?" I share the feeling. I don't remember when I first noticed it. The name of the file is CAAZMZ2X. I did a google search and found a web site in China that has a lot of pictures (like a modeling agency). I have the latest Norton Firewall and Anti-Virus software and run a scan weekly. It was also installed last year when this came up. Thanks for your response. D |

To delete the file in command prompt follow these steps:
1. Start>Run>Cmd 2. cd c:\documents and settings\username\desktop 3. del filename |

It could of course be Spyware, especially if it's linked it pictures on the web. If you don't mind, I would like you to run some programs to make sure your machine is clean from all infections and Spyware/Ad-ware - that ok ?

Or just
"delete " + drag-drop-file-into-command-prompt + Enter

^^ You can do, but it kinda defeats the purpose of a command prompt that, god knows why MS introduced that in XP.

Did not work. I got the error message that couldn't find the file. Like I mentioned previously, the file size is zero bytes. I'm just an old retired mechanical engineer, sure seems like there should be a simple "get rid of this and forget you ever had it and don't bother me with any excuses.", i.e., an icon eraser!!! |

Confirm if it truly exist in desktop by "dir" or explorer. Try to delete "iconcache.db". |

Drag it into notepad, and edit it, add a few lines of text.
You may need to rename it to a .txt file first though Regards

Don't know for sure how to do this. Every thing I have tried says, "Can't find the file, etc.", and I am sitting right here looking at it. I can't even move it off my desktop into another folder. I guess I could make it larger and use it for wallpaper. My fall back hillbilly solution is to just stick a post-it note over it. |
