    Unwakeable sleep

Occasionally I'll leave my laptop (an Acer Extensa) on overnight and the next morning I'll hear the fan running, but nothing happens when I press the space bar, move the mouse or trackpad, press the power button, or press any of the monitor function keys (chaning monitor to projector, etc). It seems to be in a state somewhere between sleep and awake. The only thing I'm able to do to use it again is to do a hard shut-down by holding the power button for 10 seconds.

Anything I can do when the computer is in this state other than doing a hard shutdown?

Perhaps it's an acpi bios problem. You could see if there are any bios updates available for your machine. But before updating a computer bios I'd want to be pretty sure it was going to help.

Also, what are your power settings? Maybe adjust those so that it doesn't sleep or suspend.
