    Win 7 reboot loop

    Sony laptop w/ win7 home.

    Reboots after splash screen.

    Have tried:
All advanced menu options (safe modes, last known good config, debugging, low vid, etc)

    Bsod error: 0x07b

Chkdsk through recovery console: no errors determined

Chkdsk via HD enclosure connected to another computer: no errors

Sfc /scannow through rec console gives message: another repair process needs reboot. Run sfc after reboot. (i have run after reboot, same msg)

System restore: have tried various restore points. All seem to go through process, but then error message saying could not complete. No changes were made.

Ran malwarebytes and superantispyware while connected to another computer: 1 infection quarantined by malwarebytes.

I don't have a spare hd to install an OS to. Was going to purchase one, but if thats not the problem, will need to pay restocking fee if I open it.

Basically, trying to see what else I can try before getting a new hd. Tomorrow I will try reinstalling OS on this hd, but looking for other thoughts.

    Thanks.

This is where I would throw in my fedora live cd and see if linux boots and runs properly on the machine, with the extra benefit if it does boot OK you can recover data off the hard drive as long as the hd isn't completely dead.

Try running memtest on it - I think one of your RAM sticks may be faulty

    Thanks for the replies.

@DonR: This is a Sony Vaio laptop. The BIOS options are very limited, and doing a google search doesn't seem to show any way to unlock the full set of options. All I can seem to change is Date/Time, AMD Virtualization, BIOS Password, and Boot order. No other options available anywhere.

@Doug: I was going to use a Linux CD to test, just hadn't had a chance. The HD doesn't seem to be dead which is why I don't want to buy a new HD. I'm not entirely convinced. I can access files and such, so I'm sure I can copy off the data by connecting the HD to another computer. Thanks

@aitken: Was trying to avoid this option, or at least wait until near the end as Memtests always take forever. But I think I will do this option after I exhaust all other ones (before purchasing a new HD).

If anyone knows of how to unlock BIOS features, please let me know...

(Also, this laptop is less than a year old).

    Thanks again.

Thanks DonR: I went ahead with the info in the link you shared without changing the BIOS settings, and I am now able to get into Windows.

In case anyone else needs the info:

First try changing the SATA config in the BIOS from IDE to AHCI or ATA.

Next you may need to rebuild the boot records.
Boot from the Windows 7 install cd. Load the up Command prompt.

    bcdboot C:\windows
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

@hiker: lol..yea, as you found out , the first line just says "TRY" changing the SATA config.

that part wasn't mandatory...the rest of the procedure is what you would need to go through [as you also found out].

Glad it worked for you. cheers.

Check your partitioning too. I recently had a client computer with a 'bootkit' on it (TDS-4) which added a 1mb partition in the extra space normally found at the end of a disk after a normal installation of windows. The bootkit marked the new 1mb partition active and installed it's own bootloader there. It seems to me the infected computer hung at the splash screen when there was no network connection.

Thanks Doug. I'm going through checking and scanning all that I can think of. I will take a look at the partitioning as well to see if anything abnormal comes up.

Excellent. Didn't think the drive itself was faulty so my thoughts were towards the RAM. Glad I was wrong though

Nice job Hiker. There are quite a few malware out there right now that infect the MBR. Running fixmbr and rebuilding the BCD should have eliminated that possibility for you. Definitely something to be on the lookout for though; glad you were able to get it sorted out with DonR's advice.
